Gunnedah’s first Group 4 first-grade premiership in 28 years, and their first grand final at Kitchener Park in 31. Moree, who had won the previous two deciders, were denied a third straight title.

A drought broken at home

Gunnedah earned hosting rights by beating Moree 22–20 in the major semi-final, and made the most of them. Moree came through the preliminary final 34–20 over Dungowan to set up the rematch, chasing a third consecutive premiership after winning the last two at home.

Twelve months earlier the same fixture had gone Moree’s way 32–16. This time the margin went the other direction, and the home side never let the game get away from them.

Captain Callum Hayne lifted the trophy for a side coached by his father, Sean Hayne — a father-and-son premiership at the club’s own ground, in the first decider Kitchener Park has staged in three decades.

The rest of grand final day

Gunnedah completed a double in the women’s tackle decider, beating Moree 14–10. Dungowan took out reserve grade, Werris Creek the under 18s, and Kootingal the ladies league tag — five clubs sharing the silverware across the afternoon.
