WIN Stadium in Wollongong before kick-off, with the ocean visible beyond the ground

Rugby League World Cup 2026 in Wollongong: One Night, and England Play Twice

Wollongong gets a single night of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup — Friday 30 October — and both halves of the double-header are England. The women play Samoa at 5:50pm, the men play Papua New Guinea at 8:05pm, and then the tournament moves on.

One night is not many. It is also, for a city this size, about as concentrated a night of international rugby league as you will get.

Wollongong fixtures

Date Match Kick-off (AEDT)
Fri 30 October Women’s: England v Samoa 5:50pm
Fri 30 October Men’s: England v Papua New Guinea 8:05pm

The ground

Matches are at WIN Stadium, which the tournament lists as Wollongong Showground — World Cup venues drop their sponsor names for the duration. It is a rectangular ground on the edge of the city centre with the ocean immediately behind the eastern side, and it is the home of the Illawarra half of the St George Illawarra Dragons. Capacity is around 23,000, which for an England pool match is a genuinely tight, loud configuration rather than a half-empty big stadium.

Why England v PNG is the one to watch

Papua New Guinea is the only country on earth where rugby league is the national sport, and their support travels in a way no other tier-two nation’s does. England arrive as one of the three realistic winners of the tournament. It is a mismatch on paper and almost never one in atmosphere.

The women’s match beforehand is a Group A game between England and Samoa, with England among the favourites there too. Both matches are round-three fixtures, which means by 30 October the pool picture will already be mostly resolved — and in a tournament this short, a round-three game is often the one that decides who goes home.

Where it sits in the tournament

The World Cup runs 15 October to 15 November, opening with Australia against New Zealand at Sydney Football Stadium and finishing with both finals at Lang Park in Brisbane on 15 November. Twelve venues are in use across nine cities.

Nearby: Parramatta hosts seven matches, including a triple-header, and Newcastle hosts both semi-finals. Full pools, venues and schedule: Rugby League World Cup 2026.
